CBD and psoriasis: does it work to relieve it?

In this post, we break down recent research on CBD and its potential impact on psoriasis treatment. We will explain how this compound extracted from hemp could contribute to the management and mitigation of the symptoms associated with this dermatological condition that, to date, still does not have a definitive cure

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is defined as a chronic autoimmune pathology that impacts the skin. Its origin is found in a genetic predisposition, but its manifestation is influenced by environmental factors. This means that, although the propensity to develop it is genetically inherited, its symptoms are triggered by external elements such as environmental pollution and stress.

This condition manifests itself through inflammation resulting from an abnormal reaction of the immune system, which causes a continuous cycle of inflammation and an increase in immune system cells. This inflammation usually manifests itself in the form of red, scaly plaques.

How does psoriasis affect mental health?

According to data from the World Psoriasis Day Consortium, this condition affects approximately 2-3% of the global population. According to the data collected by this consortium, psoriasis is a serious dermatological disease that deteriorates the quality of life of 60% of those who suffer from it.

Why CBD can help psoriasis?

Over the past five decades, cannabis research has advanced significantly, from the synthesis of CBD and THC by Raphael Mechoulam, to the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the 90s.

It has been discovered that the external stimuli that our skin receives affect the endocrine, immune and nervous systems, these systems being susceptible to regulation by the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This ECS plays a crucial role in suppressing skin inflammation, and most skin cells have been observed to possess cannabinoid receptors.

Despite the fact that cannabinoids can influence skin functions through the immune neuroendocrine network, their specific role in dermatological conditions remains an open area of research. It has been suggested that an imbalance in the endocannabinoid system could be a determining factor in dermatological problems.

Raphael Mechoulam, a pioneer in this field, has highlighted the importance of the endocannabinoid system in various diseases. Recent research, including a 2019 study, indicates that cannabinoids could offer promising alternatives to conventional treatments for skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, acne, and psoriasis.

Slow cell growth

Recent research indicates that CBD and other cannabinoids present in cannabis could be effective in moderating the accelerated growth of keratinocytes, immature cells common in psoriasis. According to a study from a reliable source, cannabinoids and their receptors may play a crucial role in regulating the production of these skin cells. In addition, it is suggested that cannabis could be beneficial not only in the treatment of psoriasis, but also in wound healing and other keratinocyte-related conditions.

Relieving psoriasis pain

It has been noted that cannabis could surpass opioids in efficacy in relieving acute and neuropathic pain. According to a study published in Current Rheumatology Trusted Source, cannabis could also be beneficial in reducing chronic pain. Additionally, an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association supports the effectiveness of CBD in treating pain.”

Immune System Regulation

Although more research is required, preliminary studies suggest that cannabis may attenuate the severity of inflammation in certain conditions, including autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis.

Although further study is still needed, many people report benefits in controlling the rate of skin cell growth and decreasing inflammation.

Effects of CBD on psoriasis: clinical and scientific studies

Over the past decade and a half, numerous clinical studies have actively explored CBD as a potential treatment for psoriasis. Currently, several clinical trials are underway, mainly focused on the use of CBD, either topically or internally. According to expert Hervé Damas, M.D., the choice between topical applications or a combined approach of topical and systemic treatments depends on the severity of the condition.

A notable study at Aalborg University, Denmark, is examining the use of 10 mg CBD tablets to treat arthritic psoriasis on the hands, adjusting the dosage based on the patient’s response.

Additional research has experimented with various cbd creams and oils. For example, a 2019 Israeli study evaluated a mixture of CBD and THC, although the findings have not yet been disclosed.

Another Italian study from 2019 tested CBD-enriched ointments on patients with dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin scars. Although the preliminary results were positive, the lack of a control group and the small sample size limit the strength of the conclusions.

How to Use CBD to Help Treat Psoriasis

Below, we explain the ways of use most recommended by experts:

Route of administration

According to current clinical trials, it seems that the most effective strategy for using CBD in the treatment of psoriasis involves a combination of both internal and external approaches.

Internal use, which involves incorporating CBD into the bloodstream, can be carried out in a variety of ways, such as through transdermal patches or sublingually administered CBD oils. Sublingual administration, which involves placing the oil under the tongue, is one of the most popular ways due to its rapid action, as it allows CBD to reach the bloodstream quickly.

Importantly, although the internal use of CBD is not regulated in Spain, it is a fairly common practice in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

Dose

According to the findings of research carried out by the University of Alborg in Denmark, it could be started with a daily dose of 10 mg. If no significant improvements are observed, an increase in the frequency of administration would be considered, from once a day to twice a day after a period of 2 weeks.

Although topical application does not lead cannabidiol into the bloodstream, it does offer much-needed relief. CBD-enriched creams and oils can provide relief comparable to essential oils.

Complementary habits

To properly care for skin affected by psoriasis, it is important to follow a daily routine that includes daily baths, preferably with salts, bath oils or colloidal oatmeal, which provide additional benefits.

It is essential to apply creams or balms regularly and supplement it with oils to keep the skin hydrated. During the night, it is recommended to cover the affected areas to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. In addition, it is beneficial to expose the skin to controlled amounts of sun to obtain vitamin D.

It is crucial to avoid the factors that can trigger psoriasis, such as infections, skin lesions, stress, smoking and excessive sun exposure as well as to minimize alcohol consumption, as it can aggravate the symptoms.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key; This includes quitting smoking, moderating alcohol consumption, staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining an appropriate weight, all of which contribute to effective psoriasis control.

Should CBD be considered for psoriasis?

Cannabis, and in particular CBD, is presented as a promising possibility in the treatment of psoriasis symptoms. Initial studies suggest that CBD could play a relevant role in managing the pain associated with this condition. However, it is imperative to conduct additional research to accurately determine their level of effectiveness.
