What does HARVARD say about CBD?
We bring to our blog an excerpt from a Harvard Health Publishing publication where he reviews everything we know or don’t know about CBD.
Cannabidiol (CBD) has recently been covered in the media, and you may have even seen it as an extra booster for your post-workout morning smoothie or coffee. What exactly is CBD? Why is it suddenly so popular?
How is cannabidiol different from marijuana?
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is in the marijuana plant family. While CBD is one component of marijuana (one in hundreds), it doesn’t cause “euphoria” on its own. According to a report by the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects that indicate a potential for abuse or dependence… To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
The Evidence for the Health Benefits of Cannabidiol
There are preclinical trials that go along the lines that CBD could treat anxiety, and for patients suffering from insomnia, studies suggest that CBD can help both fall asleep and stay asleep. (https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/supplementing-your-sleep)
CBD may offer an option for treating different types of chronic pain. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed that, using an animal model, CBD applied to the skin could help reduce pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. More human studies in this area are needed to substantiate CBD proponents’ claims about pain management.
Is CBD safe?
First of all, make sure that the product you buy has the exact components for which you are buying it. Check that you can access the analytics of the products you want to purchase. CBD is non-toxic but can come into play with other medications you are taking at the time, so it is best to ask your doctor beforehand.
Conclusion? We need more research, but CBD may prove to be an option to manage certain problems.
